What is a Syllable?
A syllable is a word part with one vowel sound. Clap each part:
- wa-ter = 2 syllables (clap, clap)
- beau-ti-ful = 3 syllables (clap, clap, clap)
- el-e-phant = 3 syllables
- un-der-stand = 3 syllables
How to Divide Words
- Find the vowels in the word
- Look at the consonants between vowels
- Split between consonants: rab-bit, hap-py
- If only one consonant, try splitting before it: o-pen, mu-sic
Practice: Split and Read
- important → im-por-tant
- education → ed-u-ca-tion
- Nigeria → Ni-ge-ri-a
- community → com-mu-ni-ty
