Counting back means starting at the bigger number and counting backward by the smaller number.

This strategy works best when you are subtracting a small number (1 to 9).

Example 1: 56 − 3. Count back from 56: 55, 54, 53.

Example 2: 72 − 4. Count back from 72: 71, 70, 69, 68.

Example 3: 80 − 6. Count back from 80: 79, 78, 77, 76, 75, 74.

Tip: Be careful when crossing a tens boundary! For example, counting back from 31: 30, 29, 28...
