Syllable Clapping: Breaking Words into Parts

Learn to break words into syllables by clapping.

10 min

🎯 What You'll Learn

You will learn to break words into smaller parts called syllables by clapping along.

🌟 Let's Start

When Amina sings her name, she notices it has three parts: A-mi-na. She claps three times — one for each part! Her brother Ade has two parts: A-de — two claps. These word parts are called syllables.

📚 New Concept

A syllable is a beat in a word. You can clap or tap the table for each syllable.

One-syllable words (1 clap): cat, ball, fish, hand

Two-syllable words (2 claps): wa-ter, man-go, gar-ri, La-gos

Three-syllable words (3 claps): ba-na-na, um-brel-la, to-ma-to, com-pu-ter

How to clap syllables: Say the word slowly. Every time your mouth opens wide to make a new sound burst, that is a new syllable. Clap for each one!

🎮 Let's Practice

  1. Clap the word table. How many claps?
  2. Clap the word pencil. How many claps?

💡 Remember

Every word is made of parts called syllables. Clap once for each part. This helps you say and read long words!
