Funke's teacher says word parts slowly: "wa... ter." Funke puts them together and shouts "water!" The teacher says "um... brel... la" and Funke says "umbrella!" Putting word parts together is like solving a puzzle.

Blending means putting syllables together to make a word.
Two-part words:
- sis... ter = sister
- pen... cil = pencil
- riv... er = river
- mon... key = monkey
Three-part words:
- to... ma... to = tomato
- hos... pi... tal = hospital
- beau... ti... ful = beautiful
How to blend: Say the parts slowly, then faster, then quickly as one word. Slow: um... brel... la. Medium: um-brel-la. Fast: umbrella!
