Building Reading Speed

Practice strategies to increase reading speed while maintaining comprehension

12 min

Learning Objective

4Rf2: Read grade-level text at an appropriate rate

Why Speed Matters

When you read too slowly, you forget the beginning by the time you reach the end. Reading at a good pace helps you understand the whole text.

Grade 4 Target: 100-120 words per minute

Timed Reading Practice

Read this passage and time yourself (ask someone to time you, or count to yourself):

Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa. Over 200 million people live there. The country has many different languages, cultures, and traditions. Lagos is the biggest city. It is very busy with markets, schools, and businesses. Children in Nigeria love to play football, tell stories, and help their families. Education is very important because it helps children build a better future for themselves and their communities. Every child deserves the chance to learn and grow.

Tips to Read Faster

  1. Don't point at each word — let your eyes move ahead
  2. Read phrases, not single words: "in the market" not "in... the... market"
  3. Practice the same passage 3 times — you will get faster each time
